The American Academy in Rome is honored to support this event, presented by the International Committee of Historical Sciences (CISH) on the occasion of the International Prize for History, awarded to Anthony Grafton.

Dr. Anthony Grafton (2004 Resident) is the Henry Putnam University Professor of History Emeritus at Princeton University, where his research and teaching are focused on the history of science and early modern Europe. He has received a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Balzan Prize, the Mellon Foundation's Distinguished Achievement Award, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and most recently the 2025 Barry Prize for Distinguished Intellectual Achievement from the American Academy of Sciences and Letters. In 2011 he served as the President of the American Historical Association, and he is a member of the American Philosophical Society and the British Academy.

He is the author of more than forty books, including New Worlds, Ancient Texts: The Power of Tradition and the Shock of Discovery (Harvard University Press, 1995), Bring Out Your Dead: The Past as Revelation (Harvard University Press, 2004) and Magus: The Art of Magic from Faustus to Agrippa (Harvard University Press, 2023).
