Morgantina 1955–2015: Sixty Years of Excavations in Sicily

Morgantina 1955–2015. 60 Years of Excavations in Sicily

This year marks the sixtieth anniversary of the excavations in the ancient town of Morgantina in east central Sicily. The excavations began in the summer of 1955 and were codirected by Erik Sjöqvist, professor of classical archaeology at Princeton University and former director of the Swedish Institute in Rome. Although always an American excavation project, Swedish participation has been large throughout the years. This conference aims at presenting past and present work at Morgantina and at the same time highlighting the scholarly collaboration and friendship between the United States and Sweden.

The event is organized jointly between the Swedish Institute in Rome and the American Academy in Rome and made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Swedish Foundation for Humanities and Social Sciences.
