The event explores the travels and discoveries of women archaeologists featured in Women & Ruins: Archaeology, Landscape, and Photography—including Gertrude Bell, Esther Van Deman, the Bulwer Sisters, and Marion Blake—followed by a discussion of Olivier Guez’s Mesopotamia with Caroline Goodson, Ilaria Puri Purini, and moderator Raffaella Silvestri.
The annual New York Gala celebrates the extraordinary innovation, scholarship, and exchange of ideas that have taken place at the Academy since 1894. Proceeds from the evening support the Academy, which provides time and space for the world’s best thinkers, scholars, and artists to create and imagine a better future.
This is the first in a series of five lectures on Material Environments, hosted jointly by the American Academy in Rome and the British School at Rome over the academic year 2025–26. Through five evening lectures, speakers will present new research on environments of ancient and post-Classical Rome and Italy. Changing technologies of research provide new answers to questions about the experience and effect of landscape and climate. These lectures showcase the ways in which environmental considerations recast our study of the past.
