Victoria Hodges

Victoria Hodges (she/her) is the Andrew W. Mellon Dissertation Fellow in the Department of Classics at Rutgers University. Her dissertation, titled “Reading with the Body: Novels, Narratives, and Fragments,” examines how ancient readers experience, respond to, and interpret the text beyond the societal mechanisms of education, gender, class, and wealth in the Imperial period. During her tenure as a doctoral fellow, Victoria has held the Michael Jameson Fellowship (2022–2023) and the Homer A. and Dorothy B. Thompson Fellowship (2023–2024) for research at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. In addition to her dissertation research, Victoria has presented papers on readership, dance, and gender in the Imperial period with publications on the sublime in Lucian’s True Histories, music in Aristaenetus’ Epistles, and acrobatic spectatorship in the Latin novels. While at the Academy, she will conduct research on ancient dance, kinetics, and the reader in motion. From October 2026, Victoria will be a lecturer in Classical languages and literature at St Anne’s College, University of Oxford.
