Blindness, Blossom and Desertification
Part of an ongoing painting series I initiated in 2023, Blindness, Blossom and Desertification emerged from a personal urgency to explore the foundational roles of art in ritual practices and environmental contexts. Using a blend of spices and powders—hibiscus, green lalo, ashes, charcoal, paprika, red clay, soil…—applied to linen, I create textured references to the surfaces of rock and cave art, connecting my work to the earliest expressions of humankind.
These visuals result from rapid, instinctive gestures: hand movements, the throwing of powders, and expressive brushstrokes. The title of the work emphasizes the link between the artwork and the soil I collect from diverse rural areas, which I then use as a medium for painting. This method evokes the familiar scents of my homeland, forging an innate connection to the land. The paintings also evoke poetry, reflecting my attempt to merge landscape and language, while illuminating the gradual erosion of the earth beneath our feet. Through this series, I address themes of dispossession, migration, and climate change, capturing the fragile balance between nature and human experience.
