
John Crump
Throughout his career, John has been a champion of design’s power to shape the human experience. As the Corporate, Commercial + Civic, Studio Director in SmithGroup’s Washington, DC, office, his work focuses on site-specificity, placemaking, and performance. With a deep understanding of historic context and innovative design principles he aims to bridge the gap between historical significance and modern functionality. His leadership has guided teams across commercial, federal, mixed-use, hospitality, and amenity projects delivering forward-thinking designs that integrate aesthetics, functionality, and smart, sustainable solutions. His collaborative approach ensures each project meets the highest standards of quality, functionality and urban dynamics while creating spaces that enhance community and environment. His work includes prominent projects such as 1700 New York, 901K, and the Hotels at WharfDC.
A graduate of the Savannah College of Art of and Design, John is committed to the profession. He is an active member of the American Institute of Architects, the Economic Club of Washington, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, and currently serves as Vice Chair of the Washington Architectural Foundation. He has been instrumental in mentoring the next generation and recently co-founded the David J. Varner Path to Licensure Program in honor of his colleague and mentor. Now in its third year, the program provides young designers, coaching and resources to inspire and help navigate the exam process.
