Project description

I plan to compose two new works during the fellowship period. The first composition, Glitchscape, is a collaborative piece for orchestra, live video, and obsolete technology that will have its first portion presented by the American Composers Orchestra at Zankel Hall in 2013. The piece reflects my desire to integrate more unconventional and “found” instruments into the orchestra—in this case, a collection of toys and other electronic devices from the early 1980s that represent the first electronic sounds I remember hearing. The second composition, Living Language, will explore the ancient roots that influenced our modern languages in creating a work that develops from the most basic, primal utterances to increasingly complex musical syntax. The work is to be a concerto for the Curtis guitar department head, Jason Vieaux. I would like to use part of my stay in Rome to research how languages change over time and how this imprint comes to be left on other cultural artifacts.
