I will develop a new body of work growing out of ongoing daily commitments—artistic, scholarly, and spiritual. My transdisciplinary art practice combines video, installation, performance, poetry, and prints—different modalities—all organized around a central commitment to writing as an activity of thought manifesting in many forms. I am an artist, writer, teacher, and activist whose media and performance works address urgent contemporary issues from the perspective of a queer Jewish man living with AIDS. Throughout my career, my works have included Jewish themes and cultural references. In Rome and throughout Italy, I will research the history of Italian-Jewish Torah and Kabbalist scholars Ovadia ben Jacob Sforno (1475-1548), Moshe Haim Luzzatto (1707-1746) and Elijah Benamozegh 1822-1900. I will conduct research of manuscripts and literature available in Rome and Italy. For example, the Cardinal Bea Centre for Judaic Studies supports scholarship in Judaism and Jewish-Christian Relations.
