In Rome I will develop photographs, drawings, video, field recordings, and sculpture organized around two Etruscan forms: the bronze mirror and the site of the necropolis. The mirror is a life object, held in the hand and used in the production of physical human beauty. It accompanied its possessor into the city of the dead, where its ability to reflect life was lost entirely. The necropolis was itself a mirror of life, with tombs built like underground houses and organized into cities, with streets and squares mirroring the layout above and walls painted with banquets and games. Fieldwork will concentrate on the Etruscan landscape north of Rome — the painted tombs at Tarquinia, the rock-cut façades at Norchia, and the territory around Orte and Bomarzo, where Etruscan sites and the Sacro Bosco share the same volcanic landscape. Made from observation, the work will focus less on accurate depiction than on how sensory experience, fatigue, and drifting attention register in the body.
