Project description

I propose to create a series of small freestanding architectural facades that will act as a generative instrument for a body of photographs, drawings, and objects. These facades will use contemporary Italian storefronts as well as Giorgio de Chirico’s 1916 Metaphysical Interiors as points of inspiration. I plan to initiate my project by traveling to Ferrara to further research the context of de Chirico’s paintings, and I will also visit the few Italian and European collections that house them. I am particularly interested in Ferrara’s unusual combination of Jewish and Masonic cultural traditions that helped form the inspiration for this body of work. As I construct and develop my own works, I imagine incorporating a variety of local materials, such as soil, castings of foodstuffs from Italian markets, and architectural and advertising detritus.
