Yuh Was a Spen Time a Mocho (pronounced muk-coh)
Project description

Currently, the project is conceived of as a nonlinear travel film and performance installation. Alongside the installation, I will also produce a book composed of landscape photographs (altered and unaltered) and a script in the style of a travelogue. This project begins with a family joke, a joke in which one Jamaican parent claims that the other is from a place called Mocho (an equally real and imaginary place signifying remoteness and backwardness). Using that joke as a place of departure, I will create a more ambiguous cultural image than the one presented to me of Mocho, a rural community in Jamaica. This will not be an attempt to balance the picture or offer up an alternative exoticism. It is an attempt to complicate an image, so that we may pay attention to it instead of passively dismissing it as known. I want to turn Mocho, a place I only known through a joke, back into a mystery, a fiction, a place of new and different possibilities—neither Shangri-La nor world's end.
