Dorothea Rockburne (American, born Montreal, Canada, 1932) studied at École des Beaux Arts in Montreal. She moved to the US in 1950 and attended Black Mountain College. She studied with Franz Kline, Philip Guston, Jack Tordoff, Estabar Vicentini, and mathematician Max Dehn. In 2016, she received a doctorate in mathematics at Bowdoin College.

Rockburne (1991 Resident) is featured in the collections at the MoMA, Met, Dia:Beacon, Parrish Art Museum, Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, and Brooklyn Museum, among many others (international and domestic), as well as countless private collections. Commissioned by F.A.P.E. (2007), Rockburne dedicated a mural to Colin Powell for the U.S. embassy in Kingston, Jamaica. Rockburne's recent exhibitions include a solo exhibition at the MoMA (2013–2014) and Dia:Beacon (2018–on view long term) and group exhibitions at the Met Breuer (2020), Brooklyn Museum (2020), Philadelphia Museum of Art (2020–2021), the Centre Pompidou (2021), and the Guggenheim Museo Bilbao (2021–2022). Rockburne received the Guggenheim Fellowship (1972), Induction into American Academy of Arts and Letters (2001), Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy (2009), appointed to Vice-President for Art 2015–2018 on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and honored at Guild Hall (2020).

Born in the Bronx in 1965, Lyle Ashton Harris (2001 Fellow) has cultivated a diverse artistic practice ranging from photography and collage to installation and performance art. His work explores intersections between the personal and the political, examining the impact of ethnicity, gender, and desire on the contemporary social and cultural dynamic. Harris has been widely exhibited internationally, including most recently in “Lyle Ashton Harris: Ektachrome Archive” at the Institute for Contemporary Art, Miami. A solo exhibition of his works spanning three decades will be presented by the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University in 2022. Harris is represented in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Tate Modern, London, UK, among many others. Harris is a Professor of Art at New York University and lives in New York. His book Today I Shall Judge Nothing That Occurs was published by Aperture in 2017.

Carrie Mae Weems (2006 Fellow) is represented by Jack Shainman Gallery and is currently the Artist in Residence at Syracuse University.  She lives in Syracuse, New York with her husband Jeffrey Hoone who directed Light Work for almost four decades.

Weems has received a multitude of awards, grants, and fellowships including the MacArthur Award and the National Endowment of the Arts, among many others. Major solo exhibitions of Carrie’s work include Carrie Mae Weems: The Museum Series, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2014), Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, and The Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2013–2014.

She is represented in public and private collections around the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Tate Modern, London, England; the Museum of Modern Art, NY and Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Ann Hamilton (2017 Resident) is a visual artist internationally recognized for her large-scale multimedia installations, public projects, and performance collaborations. Responsive to the contingencies of the sites where she works, her recurring forms—cloth, texts spoken and written, animals, and people suspended or in motion—immerse viewers in an atmosphere both visceral and literary, individual and collective, animate and inanimate, silent and spoken.

Born in Lima, Ohio, in 1956, Ann Hamilton received a BFA in textile design from the University of Kansas in 1979 and an MFA in sculpture from the Yale School of Art in 1985. From 1985 to 1991, she taught on the faculty of the University of California at Santa Barbara. Hamilton has served on the faculty of The Ohio State University since 2001, where she is a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Art.

Martin Puryear (1998 Resident) was born in Washington, DC, in 1941. His first one-person exhibition was in 1968, and since then he has exhibited throughout the world, including public commissions in Europe, Asia, and the United States. His work was featured in Documenta 9, and in 1989 he represented the United States at the São Paulo Bienal, where he was awarded the festival’s Grand Prize. In 2007 the Museum of Modern Art in New York organized a survey of his work, which traveled to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. In 2015 the Art Institute of Chicago organized an exhibition of fifty years of his works on paper, which traveled to the Morgan Library and Museum in New York and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington. Puryear received a MacArthur Foundation award in 1989 and a National Medal of Arts from President Obama in 2011. In 2019 he represented the United States at the 58th Venice Biennale.

Join the world-renowned American composer Nico Muhly (2018 Resident) in his New York City studio for a festive evening of live music, composed and performed by Academy figures across generations.

Nico Muhly, born in 1981, is an American composer who writes orchestral music, works for the stage, chamber music and sacred music. He’s received commissions from The Metropolitan Opera: Two Boys (2011), and Marnie (2018); Carnegie Hall, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Tallis Scholars, and King’s College, Cambridge, among others. He is a collaborative partner at the San Francisco Symphony and has been featured at the Barbican and the Philharmonie de Paris as composer, performer, and curator. An avid collaborator, he has worked with choreographers Benjamin Millepied at the Paris Opéra Ballet, Bobbi Jene Smith at the Juilliard School, Justin Peck and Kyle Abraham at New York City Ballet; artists Sufjan Stevens, The National, Teitur, Anohni, James Blake and Paul Simon. His work for film includes scores for The Reader (2008) and Kill Your Darlings (2013), and the BBC adaptation of Howards End (2017). Recordings of his works have been released by Decca and Nonesuch, and he is part of the artist-run record label Bedroom Community, which released his first two albums, Speaks Volumes (2006) and Mothertongue (2008).
