The American Academy in Rome is proud to celebrate Garrett Bradley and Gala Porras-Kim, who have been named 2025 MacArthur Fellows.

Bradley, a 2020 Philip Guston Rome Prize Fellow in Visual Arts, is a filmmaker and artist whose work explores the intersections of race, history, and identity. Her work blends archival imagery and experimental form. The MacArthur Foundation recognized her for "evoking feeling and rendering the textures of her subjects’ lives with grace and care."

Porras-Kim, the 2025 Mary Miss Resident in Visual Arts, is a contemporary interdisciplinary artist who questions how institutions interpret, classify, and preserve cultural objects. The MacArthur Foundation highlighted her ability to propose "new ways to understand and steward cultural heritage."

Bradley and Porras-Kim become the 55th and 56th AAR Fellows to be recognized by the MacArthur Foundation, underscoring the Academy’s role in fostering rigorous, exploratory, and visionary artistic and intellectual practices.

Peter N. Miller, the President and CEO of the American Academy in Rome and a 1998 MacArthur Fellow, remarked: “Over the decades, many artists and scholars have found space for experimentation and growth at the Academy and been recognized by MacArthur for their contributions. The MacArthur Fellowships and the Rome Prize share a common belief: that bold ideas and original voices change the world.”
